Desktop RAM vs Laptop RAM: DIMM and SODIMM Explained

Desktop RAM and laptop RAM are not normally interchangeable because they use different physical module formats. The correct memory depends on the device and motherboard.

Desktop RAM

Desktop computers commonly use full-size DIMM modules. Check the motherboard documentation for the supported DDR generation, capacity and memory speed.

Laptop RAM

Laptops commonly use smaller SODIMM modules. Some compact computers and mini PCs also use SODIMM, but compatibility should always be confirmed for the specific system.

DDR generation still matters

Form factor alone is not enough. You also need the correct DDR generation, such as DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5, supported by the system.
