How to Check SSD Compatibility Before You Buy
Choosing an SSD is not only about capacity or speed. The drive must match the slot, interface, form factor and system requirements of your PC or laptop.
1. Check the storage interface
First identify whether your system uses SATA or NVMe storage. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD uses a SATA connection, while an M.2 SSD can use either SATA or PCIe NVMe depending on the device.
2. Check the M.2 slot
If you are buying an M.2 SSD, check the motherboard or laptop manual for supported M.2 interfaces and supported lengths. M.2 2280 is a common size, but compatibility should always be confirmed for your specific system.
3. Check PCIe generation
For NVMe drives, check which PCIe generation your system supports. A newer PCIe SSD can operate in a compatible older slot, but performance may be limited by the platform.
4. Check capacity and operating system support
Confirm that your system supports the capacity you plan to install and that your operating system can recognize the drive. Also check whether a firmware or BIOS update is recommended by your system manufacturer.
5. Choose the correct HATRONYX category
Explore HATRONYX NVMe SSDs for PCIe storage, or see HATRONYX SATA SSDs for SATA upgrades.
For a simple checklist, use the HATRONYX Upgrade Finder before selecting a drive.
