M.2 is a form factor, not an interface
M.2 describes the physical format. An M.2 SSD can use SATA or PCIe NVMe, so you must check the slot specification before buying.
M.2 SATA
M.2 SATA SSDs communicate through the SATA interface and are intended for systems with M.2 SATA support.
M.2 NVMe
M.2 NVMe SSDs use PCIe and can provide substantially higher bandwidth on compatible systems.
How to check compatibility
- Check the laptop or motherboard manual.
- Confirm whether the M.2 slot supports SATA, NVMe or both.
- Check the keying and supported drive length.
