SSD for Laptop Upgrade: NVMe vs SATA

When upgrading a laptop, compatibility comes first. Identify the existing storage interface and physical format before choosing a replacement.

Check the existing drive

Identify whether the laptop uses a 2.5-inch SATA drive, M.2 SATA SSD or M.2 NVMe SSD. The manufacturer service manual is the safest reference.

NVMe vs SATA

NVMe SSDs use PCIe, while SATA SSDs use the SATA storage interface. An M.2 slot does not automatically mean that NVMe is supported.

Choose capacity

Choose capacity based on the operating system, applications and files. 512GB and 1TB are practical starting points for many upgrades.
