SSD Comparison & Compatibility Guide
Use this HATRONYX SSD comparison guide to choose the right storage type, PCIe generation, form factor and capacity for your PC, laptop or workstation. Always verify the exact motherboard or laptop model before ordering.
SSD Technology Comparison
| SSD type | Typical interface | Form factor | Best for | Key compatibility check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVMe PCIe Gen 5 | PCIe NVMe | M.2 2280 | High performance PCs and workstations | Motherboard or laptop must support compatible M.2 PCIe NVMe operation |
| NVMe PCIe Gen 4 | PCIe NVMe | M.2 2280 | Gaming, productivity and modern PCs | Check M.2 NVMe support and PCIe generation |
| NVMe PCIe Gen 3 | PCIe NVMe | M.2 2280 | PC and laptop upgrades | Check M.2 NVMe support and supported PCIe generation |
| M.2 SATA | SATA III | M.2 | Systems with M.2 SATA support | Confirm that the M.2 slot supports SATA, not only NVMe |
| 2.5-inch SATA | SATA III | 2.5-inch | Desktop and laptop SATA upgrades | Check 2.5-inch bay, SATA connection and physical clearance |
| mSATA | SATA | mSATA | Older compatible systems | Confirm the system specifically supports mSATA |

SSD Compatibility Checklist
- Identify the exact laptop or motherboard model.
- Check whether the system supports NVMe, M.2 SATA, 2.5-inch SATA or mSATA.
- Confirm the physical size, such as M.2 2280 or 2.5-inch.
- Check the supported PCIe generation for NVMe slots.
- Check the maximum supported SSD capacity.
- Check whether a heatsink or thermal solution is recommended or required.
- Back up important data before replacing an existing drive.
NVMe Gen 3 vs Gen 4 vs Gen 5
A newer PCIe generation can provide higher bandwidth, but the actual result depends on the platform, SSD and workload. A compatible SSD can also operate at the limits of an older supported interface. Do not choose only by generation number. Check platform compatibility and your workload first.

M.2 Does Not Always Mean NVMe
M.2 describes a physical form factor. An M.2 slot can support different interfaces depending on the platform. Check the manufacturer documentation before buying an M.2 SSD. Read the M.2 SATA vs M.2 NVMe guide for a practical explanation.
